Applications: Backcountry,
camping, disaster zones, military, anywhere water-borne pathogens and contaminents can pose
a threat to your health due to insanitary drinking water conditions. HTI
products were developed for NASA and our military and is now available to the
general public.
HTI
products employ a proprietary membrane filter that is hydrophylic (attracts
water), allow water to pass through yet blocks very small contaminents due to
the tight construction of the membrane. Water is driven across a membrane, not
by hydraulic pressure but by osmotic pressure created by a standard sport
drink powder on the clean side of the membrane. Excellent
as a back packing water filter.
HTI
products work on the basis of Forward Osmosis. Forward Osmosis filtration must
use an osmotic agent (Sugar, or Salt) to create osmotic pressure and draw the
water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane filter. HTI’s sports drink
powders and syrups have been formulated to maximize filtration capabilities,
enhance oral hydration and drink preservation. However, other kinds of
combinations containing sugars/salts will function as an osmotic agent (Ex:
Gatorade, Powerade, maple syrup, etc.)
HTI products produce a drink that is equivalent to Gatorade or any other
sports drink intended to replace calories and electrolytes lost through
exercise. There are no known ill effects from continuous consumption
.
HTI’s
proprietary membrane is extremely effective at blocking all types of
biological pathogens. Independent
studies performed by both independent and military laboratories have
consistently demonstrated that HTI’s products transform the worst possible
life-threatening waters into clean, life-sustaining drink.
This is a technology that can be used as a
camping water filter in the wilderness.
When stored below 90°F, HTI
guarantees a 3 year shelf life. Membranes tolerate high temperatures well. HTI
membranes are routinely used in industrial applications at 150°F. Like any
food product, storage below 90°F is best. If stored in less demanding
conditions, HTI products can see a shelf life of around five years.
HTI’s
products produces a range of osmotic filter products:
• Disposable Bags – The HTI HydroPack is a
two-liter membrane bag that has been pre-loaded with nutrient powder. The bag
is intended to fill overnight, that is it is placed in any available water in
the evening and in the morning it contains a drink that can be immediately
consumed or carried in a canteen. HydroPacks produce up to 20 times their
weight in drink. The bags have a protected drink spout for removing the drink
and, after use, the bag is discarded.
• Reusable On-The-Go Bags – The HTI HydroPack+ is a
filter bag inside a sealable pouch. During use, the filter bag is loaded with
a nutrient powder and the pouch is filled with unsafe water. The HydroPack+ is
then carried in a backpack or pocket until the water in the outer pouch
migrates into the filter bag. Besides portability, the HydroPack+ also has the
advantage of being reusable. After use, additional nutrient powder can be
added to the filter bag and the outer pouch can be refilled with available
water.
• HydroFlow Filters – HTI makes a line of spiral
osmotic filter tubes to be used in stationary applications. In these
applications a nutrient syrup is fed continuously to a filter tube which is
immersed in non-potable water. The filter tubes are available in a range of
sizes to produce from 1/2 liter to 4 liters per hour of drink. The elements
are designed to produce 25 to 50 liters of drink for every liter of nutrient
syrup. Figure 3a shows how the syrup flows through the spiral filter, and
Figure 3b shows how the syrup flows through the membrane envelope.
• HydroFlow Backpacks – HTI makes a small CamelBak®
style backpack that produces up to a liter per hour of dilute nutrient drink.
The backpack has a 3-liter dirty water bladder, a spiral osmotic filter tube,
a nutrient reservoir and a bite tube for drink delivery. The user fills the
bladder with available water, connects the nutrient reservoir to the filter
and can begin to drink immediately. Nutrient drink is made “on-demand.” When
loaded with water the pack weighs 10 lbs (4˝ kg), and a replaceable 700-g
nutrient reservoir will produce approximately 15 liters of drink. Figure 4
shows how the backpack works.
